2 October 1980

Trivia fans: you’ll enjoy this, so bear with me.
Since February 1980 the official Irish charts had been part of a strike action, so in its place was a fortnightly singles chart published by Hot Press, Ireland’s equivalent to Rolling Stone magazine. That strike ended in October 1980; Hot Press published the last chart of their interregnum on 2 October with Kelly Marie’s ‘Feels Like I’m In Love’ at number one, and then on 4 October the official Irish charts began to be published again but with a different song, which we’ll see in our next post, at number one. So, ‘Feels Like I’m In Love’ by Kelly Marie was number one in Ireland for just two days. (It was number one in the UK for two weeks.)
Chart idiosyncrasy aside, ‘Feels Like I’m In Love’ is disco by numbers with a chorus which feels uncomfortably high for singer and listener alike. That said, the futuristic ‘poom-poom’ laser sound effect throughout is great fun, neither song nor singer have any pretensions beyond delivering a solidly enjoyable disco tune, and in the video (below) Kelly Marie looks thoroughly delighted to be swanning around London with a sailor on each arm. Fair play to her, is what I say, for making the most of her two days in the sun.
