Ireland had three Shaky number ones in 1981 but the UK had only two; this one was also kept off the top of the latter charts by ‘Stand And Deliver’. What’s more, it was number one here for a whole six weeks! This may be a source of perverse national pride for some, but people have burnt their own flags for less.
‘You Drive Me Crazy’ is particularly egregious. Right the way through, the Welsh Elvis is yelping at an uncomfortably high pitch; I imagine any dogs who heard this tying themselves in sacks and throwing themselves into lakes. And we lapped it up, more than the Brits. Think about that.
