29 March 1986

Being young and innocent, I was genuinely concerned that Cliff Richard was literally “gonna lock her up in a trunk”. Now that I’m older and more cynical, that and the whole ‘living doll’ conceit is still as horribly sexist as it must have seemed even in 1920 or whenever it was first released. Little did I suspect in 1986 that Cliff would soon be pivoting away from his milquetoast rock n’ roll to launch his offensive on my childhood Christmasses. To me, Cliff Richard has always been a creep.
As for the self-styled anarchic comedians enabling Cliff to regurgitate this conservative gruel, perhaps their English brand of humour will forever be beyond me.
