How do you follow a surprise number one hit? As closely as possible! Even the long, clumsy two-part title is similar to that of ‘When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going’, as if some record company exec suddenly had the blinding insight that pop punters love it when Billy sings dependent clauses.
Mind you, saying “get into my car” to someone will always sound a bit dodgy, though at least with that nice Billy Ocean it’s just meant in the naff-est possible taste. Apart from that slight glitch of character, ‘Get Out Of My Dreams, Get Into My Car’ is bland ’80s soul-pop of the weakest kind.
