I’ve not experienced the tragic death of a loved one, as in the sad story behind this Eric Clapton song, nor have I needed to work out or express what must be awful and overwhelming feelings. Also, I’m not religious or spiritual; I don’t believe in life after death and I’m not even too sure about life before death. I certainly don’t believe in bland acoustic blues-rock.
All this is to say that I have the luxury of finding ‘Tears In Heaven’ a saccharine and maudlin gloop. Sure, I can imagine it has meant something to others, maybe as a shared experience, a comfort, or a way to start processing that level of gut-punching loss. If that’s you, then I wish you well. For me, there really are no circumstances in which I want to listen to ‘Tears In Heaven’ ever again.
