The Shamen - 'Ebeneezer Goode'

Wahey! I doubt anyone seriously thought ‘Ebeneezer Goode’ was about some sort of quaint Dickensian eccentric, or anything other than a surreptitious way of getting a blatant drug reference to number one (in the UK as well as Ireland). Still, it’s done so smartly, with a few other ‘e’ uses (“‘e’s a real nice geezer” and the like) as a nod to plausible deniability; it clearly wasn’t banned or un-playlisted in my earshot.

Aside from lauding ecstasy and other recreational drugs (apparently “Veras” are ‘Vera Lynns’, or skins for rolling cigarettes, and “salmon” here is ‘salmon and trout’, meaning ‘snout’, or tobacco) what really hooked us impressionable kids was this song’s catchy, chant-along chorus. Also, ‘Ebeneezer Goode’ is downright fun, a lot of which is down to Mr C’s wide-eyed wide-boy rap, garnished with a few choice cackles and camp naughty-naughties. The track underneath is a good solid Brit-house banger too. Sorted!
