Scooter – ‘The Logical Song’

Scooter - 'The Logical Song'

I’m confused. This is Scooter’s only Irish number one and by far their biggest hit here, so I expected it to be the one with the really long “SCOOTERRRRR!” and “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice”. However, neither of those happen in ‘The Logical Song’. In fact, the nice-important insight is to be from a 1995 track called ‘Move Your Ass’, which only reached no. 15 in the Irish charts. I presume that ostentatious name-call is from other lesser-charting tracks too. (Forgive me for not rooting further into Scooter’s back catalogue, but I’ve already been through Boyzone and Westlife for you. I need to draw the line somewhere.) So how come Scooter’s catchphrases seemed to be everywhere in late-’90s and early-’00s Ireland? Also, Scooter is a group, not the name of the guy. I hadn’t realised that.

What does happen here is a pitch-shifted Chipmunks vocal cover of a terrible old Supertramp song, smothered in pounding Euro-house sonic paraphernalia. Apart from a less showy shout-out of the group’s name, the catchphrase here is a weirdly random “SIBERIA!” It’s all rotten, without even the consolation of being cheesy fun. And this was the Scooter track that topped the Irish charts, not the one with the stuff everyone remembers from them. My brain hurts.
