XTM - 'Fly On The Wings Of Love'

Well, this is cheeky. Mickey Harte’s 2003 Irish Eurovision entry and number one ‘We’ve Got The World’ was noticed to have a similar chorus melody to the 2000 Eurovision winner, ‘Fly On The Wings Of Love’ (or as it was known in my house, ‘Wings On The Fly Of Love’) by the Olsen Brothers of Denmark – a sort of Danish ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Kids’. Now, just a couple of months after Mickey Joe’s high-profile chart-topper, here’s Spanish dance act XTM, accompanied by DJ Chucky and singer Annia, with a hardcore-techno-trance version of its soundalike. Oh, the banter! Hold me now!

Okay, perhaps the bantz angle isn’t the real driver here, but it’s the best I can come up with. XTM’s iteration is the kind of generic thumping techno beat you’d hear from an early-’00s carful of lads. Why the boy racers chose this one in particular, with its schmaltzy chorus and simpering flute, suggests that maybe I was misjudging them and they were all misty-eyed sentimentalists at heart. That, or actual Eurovision bantz-merchants. What were that carful of lads up to?
