The Searchers - 'Don't Throw Your Love Away'

No prizes for guessing which Liverpool four-piece pop group the Irish record-buying public of 1964 loved most. That’s right, it’s The Searchers, here with their third Irish number one in only nine months and our eighth chart-topping single from a Merseyside act in a year.

Their version of ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’ has a Buddy Holly tint, and to the showband-loving ’60s Irish punter anything ’50s-sounding was catnip. The mid-section veers into modernity with some interesting chord changes, but rights itself for another lap around the twee chorus. No horses were frightened in the listening to this record, and The Searchers click off another Irish chart-topper. In your face, The Beatles!
