My long-standing modus operandi here vis-à-vis ‘inspirational’ tracks is that I don’t knock or begrudge anyone for getting inspiration from something. Here in October 2023 as I write this, the world is being even more relentlessly dreadful than usual: take any inspiration or solace you can get, is what I say. What inspires me? Why, writing about Westlife and Black Eyed Peas singles especially for you, of course! You see what I mean.
‘Written In The Stars’ combines dramatic rap verses by childhood Gaelic footballer Tinie Tempah with the anthemic stadium rock chorus of whoever Eric Turner is. When I say “combines”, the two elements don’t actually mix or gel: they just sit side-by-side under the shared umbrella of providing inspiration content. I’m guessing TV talent shows and sports montages made great hay with ‘Written In The Stars’. It’s all very functional and featureless.
