Fair play to LMFAO for giving good factoid. You may remember how the two lads, Redfoo and Sky Blu, are uncle and nephew. They’re also the son and grandson respectively of Motown supremo Berry Gordy, so Redfoo has a half-sister who’s Gordy’s daughter with Diana Ross, a half-brother in ’80s one-hit-wonder Rockwell, of ‘Somebody’s Watching Me’, and Marvin Gaye’s legendarily bitter 1978 divorce album Here, My Dear is about his aunt Anna. What’s more, Berry Gordy is a second cousin of former US President Jimmy Carter, and both Gordy and Carter are distant cousins of Elvis Presley, making both members of LMFAO related to a US president and The King. Nepo-baby haters, put that in your pipe and smoke it!
What about LMFAO under their own steam? I must say, I’ve always liked ‘Party Rock Anthem’. Yes, they’re doing the same whoop-and-holler US EDM as the dreaded Black Eyed Peas – but without the offensive crassness. Yes, they’re goofy and dumb, and so is their track and the name of their act – but it’s all fun. I enjoy listening to this. Everyday shufflin’ and everynight party-rockin’ speak to our shared human experience. English singer Lauren Bennett adds some Britney-esque mid-section disco-diva lines; GoonRock co-writes and co-produces; both play their part, despite not being related to anyone illustrious. As for LMFAO themselves, while ‘Party Rock Anthem’ is no ‘Somebody’s Watching Me’ I like to think Redfoo and Sky Blu can shuffle into the next Gordy family reunion with their heads held high.
