Today’s who’s-related Irish Number Ones factoid: British singer Example, a chart-topper in Ireland with ‘We’ll Be Coming Back’, is a nephew of ’80s Irish footballer Tony Grealish. I’m not aware of Calvin Harris being related to any famous Irish person, but let that pass.
‘We’ll Be Coming Back’ is the fourth of five Irish number one singles in the space of 12 months for Harris as writer, producer, remixer or artist, so it’s fair to suggest he was the biggest act of 2012. That said, David Guetta was also clicking off the hits at that time, so perhaps it was more a case of shiny, bombastic EDM choruses being the sound of the early-’10s. (Hipster that I am, I prefer Harris’s scorching electro-pop ‘Acceptable In The ’80s’. )
This particular Harris joint doesn’t have one of those big EDM choruses. In fact, it’s quite a dull and subdued thing, closer to slightly electro-fied landfill US alt-rock. Apart from an Irish factoid, I can’t say Example brings anything distinctive or notable either. Perhaps he has a lot of record-buying relatives in Ireland.
