Lilly Wood & The Prick and Robin Schulz – ‘Prayer In C’

Lilly Wood and the Prick and Robin Schulz

“So, which one is The Prick?” is a question that can be asked of more bands than you’d think. In this case, Lilly Wood & The Prick is the collective name of a French folk-pop duo, neither of whom is called Lilly Wood, and Robin Schulz is a German DJ who remixed ‘Prayer In C’ to Europe-wide chart-topping effect. Schulz here is, after Milky Chance with ‘Stolen Dance’, Ireland’s second number one act in a row from Germany. Lilly Wood & The Prick here are Ireland’s second number one act in a row with a dreadful band name – and just as I had been casting shade on French bands and their naming skills too.

Schulz’s remixing skills, though, are the money-maker here. He takes the original ‘Prayer In C’, ponderous indie mumblecore with a slow but bright guitar line, hooshes it up with a light-touch folktronic beat and some Balearic vibes, and recasts that guitar part as a pleasantly breezy deep-house hook. Likeable as that hook is, this track doesn’t offer much else; I doubt anyone’s here for the singing or lyrics, which maintain their native drag. Ultimately, ‘Prayer In C’ has more pricks than kicks.
