Honestly, how this got to number one—in Ireland and the UK—is a total mystery to me. Listening to it now I was almost asleep after the first minute, and there’s still another three-quarters of the song to go. God knows how anyone managed to make it down to the record store to ask for it.
Once I’ve roused myself again and drunk several strong espressos, I have to laugh at how soporific this record is. Boris Gardiner sounds here like an elderly pub singer having a go at reggae, accompanying himself on a Casio keyboard with the drumbeat set to ‘lover’s rock’. You couldn’t say it’s a bad record, just a tranquilisingly dull one.
