The Veronicas - 'Untouched'

Is this the first Irish number one single from a computer game? I’m casting around for reasons why a 2007 song from an unknown Australian punk-pop act topped our charts in 2009 and I see it was featured on FIFA 09. I’m not a gamer, so I don’t know if it even makes a difference, but I know the FIFA games were hugely popular and that’s all I’ve got to work with here. Maybe downloading this was a quick and adjacent conversion for online gamers whose ears pricked up at those dramatic string quartet slashes.

Apart from that FIFA 09 angle and those strings, I’m at a loss as to what made this stand out from any number of ’00s post-Avril punk-pop tracks. The verses are wilfully inane; google the lyrics for yourself and marvel. There’s a smart, catchy turn in the chorus for the line “It’s not enough to say that I miss you” but as far as good bits of the song go, that’s your lot. I wasn’t living in Ireland at the time, so I don’t know what the rest of you heard in this. Was there heavy radio promotion off the back of its FIFA 09 prominence, or some T.A.T.u.-esque icky ’00s bantz angle on punkish female twins singing about being untouched? A strange one.
