Manfred Mann – ‘Pretty Flamingo’

Manfred Mann - 'Pretty Flamingo'

So, you’re the same shade of pink as Barbara Cartland’s boudoir, you stand around for ages on one foot at a time, and everyone incorrectly thinks you urinate down your legs: you big flamingo, you! No, I wouldn’t be too flattered either. That said, I reckon I’d wear the pink well: it would bring out the bloodshot in my eyes.

I doubt the young lady at the receiving end of ‘Pretty Flamingo’ would be too impressed by the rest of this flamingo name-caller’s A-game either, since his main motivation for pairing off with her is so “every guy will envy me”. The record is slightly more charming, thanks to its catchy chorus, big flailing acoustic guitar chords and reedy flute; Manfred Mann will bring this signature sound back to the Irish number one spot again shortly, albeit with a new lead singer. (Manfred Mann is the keyboard player.) ‘Pretty Flamingo’, though, is a bit of disposable ’60s pop fluff.
