Slade - 'Cum On Feel The Noize'

You made it. At least we know now that your parental control settings aren’t on, and that this sort of language is par for the course with your web browsing. Anyway, welcome: hope you’re not at work.

Spicy title spelling aside, my main surprise with an attentive full listen to ‘Cum On Feel The Noize’ is that in my mind I had expected it to sound heavier – perhaps closer to the thunderous drums and riffs of Led Zeppelin. Instead, while the vibe is raucous, especially from Noddy’s tonsil-sandpapering vocals, the “noize” is closer to mid-’90s Slade followers Oasis with no Noel but more Bonehead. Still, despite sharing 99.9% of its DNA with Slade’s earlier ‘Mama Weer All Crazee Now’, which I found irritating, ‘Cum On Feel The Noize’ is a blast. Maybe it’s the former’s put-on air of whiskey-drinking and aren’t-we-gas-craic that rubs me up the wrong way, while the latter has a more convincing feel of communal freedom and joy – something Slade will nail again even more spectacularly with another chart-topper later that same year.

‘Cum On Feel The Noize’ just sounded heavier in my head, is what I’m saying. I guess that’s egg on my face, or at least I hope it’s egg.
