‘Head & Heart’ caught my attention at the time because of its split-screen video, which you can see below, with the parallel working days of someone living their worst life and their best life. (It was made using identical twins.) As this was in the days of Covid-enforced remote working, the office scenes seemed vaguely familiar and not at all missed. I’m not sure the relentlessly cheery best-life office is a place you’d want to work either.
Anyway, applying the same type of imagery in the title to the track itself, MNEK would be its heart, and also its soul. His dance-pop voice carries the light lilting chorus and the lovelorn verse, and makes ‘Head & Heart’ more than just another routine chart-house hit. But let’s not be dismissive of producer-DJ Joel Corry: he can still be something essential to the operation, like the digestive tract.
